Dear Friends,
During this time we recognize that racial and economic injustices on the Southeast Side of Chicago and the South Suburbs have only been exacerbated by COVID-19. While CTU’s offices may currently be closed, our entire team is working hard to ensure that our community has access to much needed resources right now.
We continue to organize for stronger workplace protections for ALL workers, that do not exclude undocumented workers and their families. We continue to stay engaged with parents in local schools to increase health and safety information in our community. We are organizing against ongoing ICE raids and immigrant detention centers that threaten our public health. We are developing long-term responses to the economic hardships faced by worker-owned cooperatives locally.
We are grateful to the Chicago Community COVID-19 Response Fund from the United Way of Metro Chicago and Chicago Community Trust as well as the Woods Fund Emergency Fund for their generous support to continue our mission of supporting families in need.
As a result of the health crisis, we have heard in the last four weeks from hundreds of our community leaders in South Chicago and South Suburbs about their immediate needs.
- In South Chicago, a CTU member isn’t working and finding it difficult to cover housing and living costs for herself and her 2 children as she waits for her U-Visa application to be processed.
- In the South Suburbs, a CTU member is excluded from any federal or state relief after being told by a local fast food chain that she was laid off and needed to “find charity” elsewhere.
- On the East Side, a community member is illegally threatened to be evicted and faces the uncertainty of paying future rent and utility costs.
CTU created the Community Action Fund as a response to support our members and their families during this difficult time. Funds raised will go to support CTU leaders and community members who are undocumented or in mixed-status families that have been impacted by COVID-19. They will be able to use these funds to cover groceries, rent, utilities, medication, and much more during this health crisis.
Our goal is to provide $500 in assistance to at least 100 families in our community. Any size donation will go a long in way in aiding CTU leaders whether it’s $5, $20 or $100.
